devising is hard. here’s where we learned that. re{mix} was a full-length devised performance, and a devising process. we borrowed tools from the hugely inspiring women of Missoula Oblongata, a (then) Baltimore-based DIY theatre company, and drawing on dan’s background in Lecoq-based mime and Viewpoints, we wrangled a crack group of designers, devisors, and other divine souls. julien talked smooth, and got us a theatre for a whole month.
re{mix} had two parts:
A series of short pieces. The prompt: state a theatrical dream. bring it to life using your bodies, desires, and about $20 CAD. do it in a week. dan directed/julien produced. the variety show was an unlikely success.
A play. The prompt: take what you liked best from each piece, and make them one. take what you liked worst, and put it in somewhere, too. dan directed again. julien turned the theatre into a funeral home. a character’s father had died, apparently. we had a lot to go through.
{productions} would leave black boxes to the philosophers and armchair engineers. we decided our future was in variety shows. we’re coming to a theatre near you.
we’re coming to your house.
until then, enjoy the slideshow…
